Puffin Taking Flight Over Waves

A trip to the Farne Islands when on holiday in Berwick Upon Tweed resulted in a lot of Puffin photographs :) This was my favourite. Done in pans for the sea and soft pastel pencils for the puffin, on Pastelmat paper.

Kingfisher

A kingfisher rests on a mossy perch beside still water. I wanted the flash of turquoise and burnished orange to sing against the quieter greens of the background, building up the fine detail of the beak and feathers in gentle layers of soft pastel.

Harvest Mouse

A tiny harvest mouse curled amongst the stems. Drawn at close scale, this piece is all about delicacy — I worked the soft golden coat, rounded ears and fine whiskers carefully to capture the mouse's gentle nature.

Howling Wolf

An experiment I did using a sheet of watercolour paper which I coated with black ink. I then painted the wolf with a brush dipped in bleach. Would be interesting to know what you think.

Wolf

A second experimental piece in ink and bleach showing strong contrast and simplified shapes giving this wolf its quiet drama.
